Internal displacements by conflict and disasters in 2022

Description71.1 million people were living in internal displacement worldwide at the end of 2022, a 20 per cent increase in a year and the highest number ever recorded. 60.9 million internal displacements, or movements, were recorded during the year, 60 per cent more than in 2021 and also the highest figure ever. The number of displacements associated with conflict and violence nearly doubled to 28.3 million. The war in Ukraine triggered 16.9 million, the highest figure ever recorded for any country. The La Niña weather phenomenon persisted for a third consecutive year, leading to record levels of flood displacement in countries including Pakistan, Nigeria and Brazil. It also fuelled the worst drought on record in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, triggering 2.1 million movements.
